First Out bows out after 25 years

First Out is to close its doors after 25 years at the heart of the capital’s lesbian and gay community.

This decision comes after the failure of protracted lease negotiations as the area around the café bar undergoes intense redevelopment.

Last orders will be called on 29th October 2011. In the meantime, Malcolm, Maria and the team would love to say a big thank you to all those who have helped make First Out a cherished London institution.

For a quarter of a century, the café bar has served as a touchstone for literally thousands of young people coming out in London. First Out is where you met new friends, got your first job, prepared for Pride and, more often than not, found your first girlfriend or boyfriend.

Over the years we have offered a warm, supportive & quirky atmosphere, combined with excellent affordable veggie food that made First Out a favourite with a wide range of customers, appealing to all ages, gay and straight. Success has been built on the clever combination of urban café upstairs and chilled bar downstairs.

We urge customers and friends  call in to say farewell before the end of the month and a commemorative book will be available for signing, as well as the guest book on the First Out website.

We at First Out team have no immediate plans for relocation but, as they say, watch this space.

Despite feeling like its been around since forever, First Out was only established in 1986 (admittedly way ahead of the pack, and come to think of it, somewhat older than our younger clientele - sheesh), and was London's first out and proud lesbian & gay cafe-bar.

Over the years, First Out it has earned its place in the hearts of many for its quirky blend of laid back urban café life and chilled-out bar atmosphere.

Whether you just crave one of our delicious organic fair trade coffees in the café or prefer something a little stronger from our lovely  bar, morning, noon and night First Out has something for you.
